The colour is pale ruby. On the nose it reminds me of a hotel room in which the previous guest has been smoking. In the mouth the taste is as light as the colour. Probably fortunately so. Same for the aftertaste.
This wine is produced by Domaine Baud with 100% Poulsard grapes, under the Côte du Jura AOC, located in the Jura department of France, between Burgundy and Switzerland.
Jura encompasses seven AOC. Four geographically-determined: Arbois, Château-Chalon, L’Étoile, and Côtes du Jura. Three product-related: Crémant du Jura, Macvin du Jura, and Marc du Jura.
There are five permitted grape varieties in the AOCs of Jura: Chardonnay, Savagnin, Poulsard, Trousseau, and Pinot Noir.
Poulsard is a dark-skinned grape variety. The skin is quite thin, with little quantity of color-phenols. As a consequence, it makes very light red wines, even after complete maceration. Due to this feature, Poulsard was traditionally blended with other red grapes.
For this bottle I paid 10.50 EUR in Pontarlier, while visiting the region with my family. I found this bottle undrinkable and left it almost full at the hotel. The next day I visited some wineries in Arbois and tasted a couple more examples of wines made with Poulsard. Although I found them better, this is not a kind of grape that fits my taste.
