The colour is deep ruby. On the nose very fruity, with primary aromas of raisins, mulberries and blackberries. In the mouth savour of ripe grapes and a drying sensation that last in the medium long aftertaste.
Aleatico is an aromatic red grape variety thought to be native to Tuscany, but the vine may have been brought to Italy by the ancient Greeks. Its most famous expression is this sweet wine from Elba. The Isle of Elba is located in the Tyrrhenian Sea, off the coast of Tuscany. It has a long established viticultural history that goes as far back as the time of the Etruscans.
Aleatico wines became a favorite drink of Napoleon during his exile on Elba. He was reported to have said that they were his only consolation during this time.
I received this bottle as a present from my father, who bought it at the store of Armando in Porto Azzurro. The wine is produced by Guido Allori and should costs around 25 EUR, for a 500ml bottle.
