The colour is deep ruby. Already from the first sight the wine appears thick. An impression that is confirmed by the other senses as well. On the nose it reminds me of a Port wine. Among other aromas I can detect blackberry, caramel and chocolate, a lot of chocolate. In the mouth the wine is succulent. The aftertaste is again similar to a Port and last for a very long time. This wine is very rich, for my taste too rich. It is a wine that gives me more the sensation of eating than drinking. After swallowing it I almost feel like drinking some water.
Alma de Luzón is a blend of 80% Monastrell and 20% Syrah. Only 2’943 bottles have been produced in 2016. I tasted bottle nr 2’152.
The grapes do the alcoholic fermentation in 500 litres barrels. Then the wine spend 22 months in new French and American oak barrels, where it makes the malolactic fermentation. After bottling it rests 16 months in the bottle before being released to the market.
Although moderately priced, Alma is the most expensive wine produced by Bodegas Luzón. I bought this bottle directly at the winery for 26 EUR.
Bodegas Luzón is one of the main producers and exporters of wines of the DO Jumilla. When I visited in August I also tasted Rosado Colección 2019, a rosé made 100% with Monastrell grapes that sells for 5.50 EUR, Luzón Colección Monastrell 2019, priced at 4.85 EUR, and Portí 2016, a blend of 80% Monastrell and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon that at the winery sells for 19.50 EUR.
