The colour is deep purple. The nose has an herbal character, complemented by chocolate and dark cherries. In the mouth fresh, with round tannins and a long aftertaste of mocha, with hints of caramel.
Altos de la Finca is a blend of 60% Petit Verdot and 40% Syrah. It is aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. This explains the chocolate notes on the nose and the overpowering mocha sensation in the aftertaste.
This wine is produced by Finca Constantia, an estate located in the province of Toledo. The property was purchased by González Byass in the year 2000. Based in Jerez, González Byass original business is in producing the world famous Tio Pepe Sherry. Today it runs 14 wineries.
Altos de la Finca is labelled under the Vino de la Tierra de Castillia denomination. In Spain Vino de la Tierra is one step below the Denominación de Origen indication. This doesn’t mean that very good wines aren’t produced, as it is the case with this bottle, for which I paid 30 CHF a couple of years ago at Globus.
