Baccarossa 2021

The colour is deep purple. On the nose ripe red fruits, cherries under spirit, cocoa and coffee. In the mouth an interesting contrast between the initial sweetness and the final dryness. The aftertaste is not very long.

This red wine is made by Poggio Le Volpi winery with 100% Nero Buono grapes in Monte Porzio Catone, in the Lazio central region of Italy, some 30km southeast of Rome, in the area of the Castelli Romani.

Nero Buono is a dark-skinned red wine grape variety from Lazio. In the vineyard, Nero Buono is very vigorous, creating large canopies requiring a high level of viticultural management by vignerons.

Nero Buono grapes are renowned for their intense pigmentation and are used to bring color to less-deeply hued wines. They are among the grapes known as teinturiers, which are varieties cultivated in wine regions around Europe because of the deep color of both the skins and the juice, while most red wine grapes have white juice and the wine gets its coloring from being in contact with skins during the fermentation process. Other examples of wine grape varieties with pigmented flesh are Alicante Bouschet, Dunkelfelder and Saperavi.

For this bottle I paid 21.50 EUR at Enoteca Costantini in Rome.
