This Aglianico del Vulture presents itself with a nose dominated by blueberries. In the mouth tannins and alcohol dominate.
Neither is surprising, given the 14.5% alcohol content and the fact that the Aglianico grape is known for its tannins.
Although originally imported from Greece, today Aglianico is a red wine grape variety native of southern Italy and is known for producing full-bodied wine with firm tannins and a good ageing potential. Its merits were already praised by the Romans.
The Aglianico del Vulture DOC is located in Basilicata and produced from vines cultivated on a long extinguished Volcano.
The other well-known Aglianico’s based wines are the ones from nearby Taurasi DOCG in Campania.
I really enjoyed this bottle, that sells for slightly less than 20 CHF at Coop and that shows once again the pleasure that can be derived from good wines that are not fashionable and offers good value.
