San Román 2013

Oak, oak and oak. This Toro DO wine is dominated by, you probably guessed it, oak. Not too surprising, given the fact that the wine spends 24 months in French and American oak. What is more astonishing is the fact that the wine lacks the matter necessary to keep up with the prolonged contact with the wood. Continue reading “San Román 2013”

Aalto 2012

Very tempting and opulent aroma of ripe fruits. Red fruits dominate: raspberries, strawberries and cherries, but some black berries are also clearly detectable. Surprisingly, given the 14.5% alcohol and the 20 months spent in oak, neither the wood nor the alcohol spoils the olfactory experience.

The bright, lively fruits shine through the mouth as well. Continue reading “Aalto 2012”

Clos Des Forêts Saint Georges 2009

Seductive and sophisticated bouquet of forest floor, earth, eucalyptus, mushrooms and some strawberries. Overall a very nice aromatic complexity. (On a bit less poetic tone: at first it did remind me of cola.)

In the mouth as elegant as on the nose. Light and full, old and young at the same time. Subtle flavours of cherries, strawberries and bees wax. Continue reading “Clos Des Forêts Saint Georges 2009”

Serpico 2012

On the nose a nice aroma of ripe/under spirit fruits, complemented by herbs, liquorice and tobacco notes. In the mouth a bit rough, due to the prickly tannins. A nice contrast to the sweet olfactory sensations. The aftertaste is drying, a bit bitter and, considering the overall experience, a little anticlimactic.  Continue reading “Serpico 2012”

Sòtil 2013

On the nose very clean and linear, with an appealing aroma of sweet raspberry. Nothing more, nothing less. In the mouth rather light, but filling and elegant, with soft but firm tannins and a good acidity. The aftertaste is neither long nor rich, but nevertheless enjoyable. Overall a rather simple, but pleasant wine.  Continue reading “Sòtil 2013”

Karasi 2013

On the nose more floral than fruity, with some earthy notes. When the fruit shows up, it comes from the red berries category. In the mouth fresh and light yet filling. Good, delicate length. Overall a charming medium body red wine, that reminds me of a Gamay.

Karasi is a varietal wine made with Areni Noir grapes grown at an altitude of 1400 masl. Continue reading “Karasi 2013”

Clos des Poètes 2009

This Languedoc wine made with 95% Mourvèdre and 5% Grenache grapes is dominated by a meaty, wild game aroma. In the mouth, it tends to lack matter. Although rather light, it is pretty pleasant. On the finish a bit bitter, but fairly long. Well present tannins, which is a characteristic of the grape.

Domaine du Cagueloup 2014

The brilliant color strongly recalls black cherries.

On the nose it displays an inviting aroma of red fruits, liquorice and pepper, with herby undertones.

In the mouth the wine is as agreeable as on the nose. On the palate and in the final a bit light, but with an enjoyable fruity underlying presence.  Continue reading “Domaine du Cagueloup 2014”

Bembibre 2011

The aroma is dominated by baked berries, combined with some prunes. The 15% alcohol content is a bit prickly to the nose.

The high alcohol accompanies you in the mouth as well, with a slightly burning, but also velvety, sensation. Overall pleasing and rich in fruits, with a slightly dry finish and a fairly persistent aftertaste.  Continue reading “Bembibre 2011”
