Icewines

During my 2023 summer holidays in Canada I bought three bottles of Icewine. Each one made with a different grape variety: Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon. Since then I tasted all of them. Below the reviews.

Trius Showcase Riesling Icewine 2019: The colour is deep gold. On the nose honey, marmalade, dried apricot, candied pineapple. In the mouth mandarin, with a balance of sweetness and acidity. Continue reading “Icewines”

Pedro Ximenez Solera Fundacional 1905

The colour is pitch black. The texture very dense, almost solid. On the nose scents of burnt sugar, toffee, bitter orange marmalade, and balsamic notes. In the mouth thick, velvety, and very sweet. The aftertaste is long, although less tasty than I was expecting.

Overall, for my taste this Pedro Ximénez is a bit too sweet. Continue reading “Pedro Ximenez Solera Fundacional 1905”

Oremus Tokaji Aszu 3 Puttonyos 2014

The colour is medium gold. On the nose papaya, mango, ananas and golden raisin. In the mouth smooth, sweet and fresh. The aftertaste is pretty long.

Don PX Selection Toro Albala 1965

The colour is deep brown. On the nose mainly spices, a lot of them! It is like walking in a bazar in the Middle East, and at the same time in a cigar factory in Cuba. In the mouth very thick, velvety and savoury. On the finish coffee and chocolate that last for a very, very long aftertaste.

This sweet wine is made with 100% Pedro Ximénez, a white wine grape variety best known for its role in the sweet sherries of Jerez. Continue reading “Don PX Selection Toro Albala 1965”

Aleatico Passito dell’Elba 2016

The colour is deep ruby. On the nose very fruity, with primary aromas of raisins, mulberries and blackberries. In the mouth savour of ripe grapes and a drying sensation that last in the medium long aftertaste.

Aleatico is an aromatic red grape variety thought to be native to Tuscany, but the vine may have been brought to Italy by the ancient Greeks. Its most famous expression is this sweet wine from Elba. Continue reading “Aleatico Passito dell’Elba 2016”

Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Fèlsina 2008

The colour is medium amber. On the nose nuts, dried fruits and honey. In the mouth rich and velvety. The aftertaste is subtle, but very long.

This Vin Santo is produced by Fèlsina, a winery dedicated to the production of good quality mono-varietals wines, made mainly with the indigenous Sangiovese grape, but also with international varieties, such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Pinot Noir, and Chardonnay. The winery is located at the border between the Chianti Classico DOCG and the Chianti Colli Senesi DOCG. Continue reading “Vin Santo del Chianti Classico Fèlsina 2008”

Gruss Gewürtztraminer Vendages Tardives 2015

This white wine presents itself with a medium gold colour and a perfumed nose, characterised by tropical fruits like mango and ananas, sweet spices such as cinnamon and ginger, and rose petals. Once in the mouth, the wine gives a velvety sensation of opulence. Despite the low acidy, the mouth is left salivating and the pleasantly sweet aftertaste linger for quite a while. Weingut Haas-Lenz Zeller Schwarze Katz Riesling-Eiswein 2007

This very special sweet wine, produced from grapes that have been frozen while still on the vine, presents itself with a brilliant amber color. The nose is dominated by hazelnuts. In the mouth it tastes very sweet, with a balancing high acidity. The aftertaste is fairly long but significantly less rich than I would have expected. Continue reading “Weingut Haas-Lenz Zeller Schwarze Katz Riesling-Eiswein 2007”

Weingut Haas-Lenz Zeller Schwarze Katz Riesling Beerenauslese 2005

Visually this wine has a medium to deep Amber color. Olfactory it has a bouquet that recalls apple must, nuts and backed apple pie. In the mouth is less filling and rich than I had expected. Sweet but not overly so, with a savour that reminds me of the apples covered in sugar that my mom used to bake in the oven when I was a child. The aftertaste is discreet, but fairly long.
