The bouquet doesn’t display much complexity, with lots of smoke, cigar, mocha and liquorice, but not much fruit. In the mouth tobacco overpowers other sensation. Although well integrated, the tannins are still very present and add to the rustic experience. The finish is abrupt. The aftertaste fine, but nothing to indulge in and leaning towards a not overly pleasant mocha taste. Overall this is a fine wine, but not particularly enjoyable. For sure not worth the 140 CHF paid at ARVI.
I find this bottle rather disappointing also because the 2000 Bordeaux vintage was one of those vintages made great by the fact that quality wines were produced in every Bordeaux appellation and in all price categories.
Château Calon-Ségur acquired the rank of Third Classified Growth in the famous 1855 classification and nowadays ranks among the best estates in the Saint-Estèphe AOC, the northernmost of the six communal appellations in Médoc.
Wine growing at the property can be traced back to the 12th century. In the early 18th century the estate was purchased by Nicolas-Alexandre the Marquis de Ségur, who also owned Latour, Lafite and Mouton. It is under the ownership of this famous Bordeaux winemaker nicknamed “The Prince des vignes” that the finest chapter of the property’s history was written.
