The colour is medium garnet. On the nose herbal notes, such as oregano and anise, and a hint of strawberries. In the mouth at first gripping tannins that leave the mouth dry and with a bitter finish. With some air the wine becomes smoother and more savoury. No aftertaste worth mentioning.
This wine is produced by Argiolas under the Cannonau di Sardegna DOC appellation.
Cannonau di Sardegna is a region-wide DOC appellation that covers the entirety of Sardinia. One fifth of Sardinian wine is classified as Cannonau di Sardegna, making it the island’s most important red wine.
To be classified as Cannonau di Sardegna a wine must be made with 85% Cannonau grapes (the local name for Grenache), but most wines are made entirely with Cannonau. There are six different styles of Cannonau di Sardegna: two rosso, a rosato, a passito, and two liquoroso (sweet and dry).
It has long been thought that Garnacha arrived on Sardinia with the Aragonese, when they conquered the island in the early 14th Century. However, in the past few years, Italian researchers have uncovered evidence suggesting that Cannonau may actually be the original Grenache.
Cannonau di Sardegna wines tend to be high in anthocyanins and polyphenols, antioxidant-rich compounds which helps to live a healthy and long life. Too bad that alcohol tends to produce the opposite effect…
With an annual production of around 2.2 million bottles per year, Argiolas is the largest wineries in Sardinia. The winery is owned and operated by the Argiolas family. The first vines were planted in 1906, but the estate was officially founded in 1938.
