The nose is dominated by an aroma of apricot. In the mouth the wine displays a velvety texture and a light, but fairly long, aftertaste of the same sweet apricot first perceived on the nose.
Overall, this Jurançon Sec produced by Cave de Gan delivers a simple but very pleasant experience. At 7 EUR a bottle in Paris it offers an attractive price-quality relationship.
Jurançon is an appellation locates in southwest of France, where both sweet and dry white wine are produced, using Gros et Petit Manseng grapes.
Gros Manseng provides thick-skinned berries with high levels of both sugar and acidity. These three factors make the grape well suited for sweet wine production, although these days it is also widely used to make dry wines.
Petit Manseng is a lower-yielding variety that shares the same characteristics of its Gros sibling. It is most commonly vinified as a richly sweet wine.
The Jurançon wines have been celebrated since the Middle Ages. It is claimed that Jurançon wine appellation was in force already in the 14th Century. This would make it the world’s first appellation, although similar claims have been made on behalf of Tokaj in Hungary and Portugal’s Douro Valley as well.
