The colour is pale gold. On the nose raspberry liqueur and almonds. In the mouth pretty tasty, with an aftertaste that last for quite a while.
This wine is made with 100% Marsanne grapes by Domaine des Remizières, a family owned estate located in the commune of Mercurol, in the northern Rhône Valley. Originally the property had only 4 hectares of vines, the harvest of which was vinified by the cooperative cellar of Tain-l’Hermitage. In 1973 the Domaine des Remizières started vinification and bottling at the estate, and the property began to expand to the current 35 hectares of vines.
I found this bottle of white wine among the many reds I bought 5 years ago while visiting multiple wineries in the northern Rhône Valley of France. I have inadvertently stored this white among the reds from the prestigious Côte-Rôtie and Hermitage appellations. Now that I have started considering drinking these Syrah based wines worthy of aging, I’m confronted with a white that I would never have dared to keep this long. Not just because it is a white wine, but also because generally the ones produced under the Crozes-Hermitage appellation are not deemed suitable for aging.
From this experience I learned two things. First, to avoid wasting wine that got spoiled by too much aging you should always know what is in your cellar. Second, sometimes it is good to be messy and forget some bottles. You may find them years later and have an interesting experience, as it has been the case with this bottle.
I don’t remember how much I paid for this Crozes-Hermitage Blanc, but the price should be around 15 EUR.
