Bread crust, Golden apple and Mineral. Very fresh, both on the nose and in the mouth, where it is dry and savoury, tastes almond and leaves a citrusy aftertaste. Maybe a bit too much acidity for my taste, but overall a pleasant sparkling wine.
This Trento DOC is made entirely with Chardonnay grapes, ages more than 24 months on the yeasts and sells at Coop for 25 CHF. Almost half of the price of an entry level sparkling wine produced by the well-established Maisons of Champagne.
Giulio Ferrari started producing a sparkling wine with the “dream of creating a wine in Trentino capable of competing with the best French Champagnes” in 1902, when the region was still part of Austria, and seems like he achieved his goal.
Besides this historical cuvée, first produced in 1902, the Company produces a wide range of “Metodo Classico” sparkling wines, categorized in a Classic, a Maximum, a Perlé and a Reserve Line.
It is the first time I try a product from Ferrari, but in the past I heard multiple times praises on the quality of its sparkling wines. I can now understand why and confirm that they make a praiseworthy product.
Also to be praised is the fact that on the back label the year of disgorgement is clearly stated (for this bottle 2017). To me the clear indication of when the wine finished its maturation on the yeasts is very important and should be a must for every serious producer. It is the only way to assure the customer transparency and the guarantee that he is consuming a fresh product.
