On the nose, an aroma market by citrus fruits, floral and mineral flavours.
In the mouth very refreshing, with the citrus notes and the flint perceived on the nose resurfacing. In the fairly long aftertaste, after the lively acidity fade, I’m left with a taste that reminds me of chamomile.
Fiano di Avellino is, along Greco di Tufo and Taurasi, one of the three DOCG of Irpinia, in the Campania region of Italy.
Fiano wines have been produced in the region for at least two millennia and praised time and again. Nevertheless, half a century ago, this autochthonous grape variety was, as many others, nearing extinction, replaced by varieties that could yield larger amounts of wine. Thankfully mainly to Mastroberardino, Fiano saw a renaissance of planting around Avellino and is now delivering again praiseworthy wines.
This mass market version is a simple, lean and enjoyable wine and, for the 10 EUR I paid at the Supermarket, it provides good value. Fiano can also produce an ageworthy wine that has the potential to develop in the bottle for several years after the vintage date.
