Fruity and spicy nose of cherries and liquorice. In the mouth, beside the tight tannins and some fruity bitterness in the finish, not much worth mentioning. The aftertaste is basically absent.
Judged by the richness of the enjoyment it delivers, at 27 CHF this product is clearly overpriced. Especially if compared on an international scale. On the other side, it needs to be considered that the topography of Valais and the high labour cost of Switzerland would hardly allow to sell a red wine that even spend some time in barriques for much cheaper.
Diolinoir is a red wine variety typical of the Valais region of Switzerland, where Fin Bec winery is located. It was born in 1970 from the cross of a little-seen French variety called Rouge de Diolly and Pinot noir. It was bred at the Caudoz viticultural research centre in Pully, Switzerland, where Gamaret was also created around the same time.
Diolinoir has good disease resistance, which makes it popular with winegrowers. Moreover, its tendency to ripen early makes it well suited to Switzerland’s alpine climate. Although its original purpose was to colour wines, particularly for certain blends, the Valaiswinemakers increasingly vinify it on its own as well.
