The colour is medium copper. On the nose it is not very expressive. My nose is hard pressed to distinguish some nectarines and red apples. In the mouth refreshing, with a pleasant peach aftertaste that last for a while.
This rosé wine is made 100% with Caricagiola grapes. The Caricagiola grape is a black grape variety widespread in Sardinia and is probably also native to it, in particular from the Gallura area. Caricagiola is a very productive vine, in fact Caricagiola means “that loads a lot”, that is, it carries many bunches, “Carcaghjolu nero” means “black that gives a lot of grapes”. It is used almost exclusively in blends.
According to the lady that welcomed me at Surrau winery, as varietal this indigenous grape of Sardinia doesn’t give very satisfying results when vinified in red. As rosé it gives Gjola. A wine that sells for 16 EUR at the winery. For sure a satisfying result for the producer. According to my judgement a bit less for the consumer.
I visited Vigne Surrau towards the end of October, while travelling in Sardinia with my family. As usual I took the opportunity to discover some wineries and taste some wines.
