The colour is deep ruby. On the nose peanuts, black pepper, curry, and blackberries. A unique aroma that I find interesting. In the mouth well balanced, with an aftertaste that last for a while, although not very savoury.
This wine is made with 100% Fumin grapes by Grosjean winery in Valle d’Aosta.
Fumin is a red Italian wine grape variety grown primarily in the Valle d’Aosta region of northwest Italy. Traditionally blended with other varieties, nowadays it is vinified as varietal as well.
During the first part of my walk from Aosta to Rome, along the Via Francigena, I had the opportunity to admire the impressive vineyards of Valle D’Aosta. Vineyards that require a lot of work to maintain. Unfortunately, I found the results of all this work modest in term of the final product. In fact, none of the wines I tasted back them gave me much pleasure. This bottle of Fumin is much better than what I tasted back then, but still doesn’t encourage me to buy wines of Valle d’Aosta. After all, there must be a reason why these wines are not better known.
The Grosjean family traces its roots back to the high mountain passes of the Valle d’Aosta where they raised cattle. During the summer months, the family cultivated grapes and chestnuts on the slopes at lower altitude, stocking up on wine to supply themselves over the long winters. In 1969, Dauphin Grosjean, the father of the five brothers that now collaborate to produce the wines of this estate, was encouraged to present his wine at the local “wine expo”. The quality of his work was recognized and the entire family became engaged in the expansion of the vineyards and in the production of wine.
For this bottle I paid 14.95 EUR at Conad in Pont-Saint-Martin.
