The only reason I bought this Bardolino DOC Classico is because it is made without any sulphites added, and I was curious to judge the result.
The nose is very fresh and clean. Not obvious, given the bacteriological risks associated with not adding sulphites. The aroma of sour-cherry typical of the Corvina grape dominates. In the mouth well balanced and refreshing. Nice finish and long aftertaste of the sour-cherry first detected on the nose.
Due to multiple disappointments, I usually avoid bringing home wines that in their environment taste fine, but out of contest are not very appealing. Bardolino is one of them. Grignolino of Piedmont another. I usually find them fine when consumed locally, with some dry meat or greasy food, much less when drunk for enjoyment home, where I have plenty of more palatable options.
Overall, this one that I paid less than 8 EUR at Zeni winery, while spending some days with my family at a SPA in Bardolino, I find a very positive surprise.
Although the bitterness and tartness of the Corvina grape may be a bit irritating, overall it is a linear, well made and honest wine. A good example that to enjoy a more natural wine there is no need to compromise on richness and cleanness of flavour.
For those not familiar with the denomination, it may be interesting to know that the Bardolino vineyards are located on the eastern shores of Lake Garda, not far from the more famous Valpolicella, the region where Amarone comes from.
