Jema 2015

The colour is medium ruby. On the nose mocha, chocolate, cinnamon. In the mouth edgy and light-body, with a drying finish. The aftertaste is rather short.

This wine is made by Cesari under the Veronese IGT denomination with 100% Corvina grapes.

Corvina is famous as a key constituent of Valpolicella DOC(G) wines, notably Amarone. When it is bottled on its own, it’s relegated to lowly IGT status.

Veronese or Verona IGT is one of several IGT (or IGP: Indicazione Geografica Tipica/Protetta) titles used in the Veneto region of northeastern Italy. As implied by the title, its viticultural area covers the province of Verona. The designation was introduced in 1995, just after the IGT category was created. The wines may be made in a wide range of styles: red, white or rosé, blend or varietal, still or semi sparkling, dry or sweet.

After harvest, the grapes to make Jema are placed in drying cases for 20 days. After alcoholic and malolactic fermentation, the wine ages for 18 months in small French wooden barrels.

For this bottle I paid 10.75 CHF at Coop, 50% off the original price of 21.50 CHF.

On its own this wine didn’t give me much pleasure. When paired with food, it slightly improved.
