Is one of those Italian cult wines that own a lot to the fact of having been the first using a grape variety not traditional to the territory, and of having produced a legendary vintage.
This wine is made with 100% Merlot grapes in the Sangiovese dominated heart of Chianti Classico, and in 1992, L’Apparita 1987 had a “Judgement of Paris” moment when it beat Pétrus, Le Pin and 16 other world-class Merlot (with a jury that included Michel Rolland).
This highly praised wine, produced by Castello di Ama, currently sells at ARVI for 140 CHF. On the nose it presents itself with a predominance of black cherries, some eucalyptus and a hint of chocolate. In the mouth is smooth and rounded, despite the still rather young tannins. A bit less filling than you would expect from the very dark color and with a slightly dry finish, but with a pleasant long, ripe fruits’ aftertaste.
Although it is already enjoyable now, it probably should be cellared for a few more years to reach its peak.
Additional note: On July 14, 2020 I got to visit the winery and to taste their more traditional Sangiovese based wines. All very good wines, although not cheap. The visit has been very interesting and pleasant. The atmosphere at Castello di Ama is very classy and relaxed at the same time. They have even been so nice not to charge me the 50 EUR for the visit and tasting.
