Who would expect a Beaujolais, even a Cru, to still be fresh and highly enjoyable after 10 years?
This Morgon (one of the ten Cru of Beaujolais) is a very elegant, smooth and balanced wine, made with Gamay grapes. Still pretty fruity (raspberry) and fresh despite the age. Not too complex, but showing a very linear, clean and rather persistent taste.
It is a shame (or probably a fortune) that this kind of wine is completely unfashionable. During my wine tasting experience, I have learned that fashion is a pretty unreliable measure of worth. Quite the opposite, it is often a good opportunity to find bargains, for those that can judge on their own.
I’m not suggesting to try this specific wine, that’s probably difficult to find anyway. I did pick this bottle as an example of the value of drinking out of fashion wines. I personally love diversity and I’m eager to try different kind of wines. I seldom get disappointed!
When I visited the region (south of the way more prestigious Bourgogne) two years ago, I got to drink one of the glasses of wine that most impressed me so far: a Clos de Rochegrès 1997 (from a Magnum).
