On the nose, subtle flavour of yellow fruits, like peach and ananas, vegetal notes and flint scent. In the mouth, some more freshness would be welcomed. The experience finishes on a slightly bitter note, which accompanies the aftertaste as well.
The founder of the estate, Livio Felluga, moved from Isola d’Istria in Slovenia to the region in the ‘30. In the ‘50 he purchased his first few hectares of old vineyards in Rosazzo and set to work to restoring and replanting them. He subsequently expanded his production, introducing in the meantime innovative ideas and techniques. The outcome has been the creation of one of Friuli’s most impressive wineries. Livio Felluga passed away 2016, at the age of 102.
Friulano is a grape variety thought to be native of South West France, but nowadays is most famous for its role in the white wines of Friuli, as it is the case with this wine produced under the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC.
Previously known as Tocai, it had to review its name due to a rule issued by the European Court, according to which “Tokay” should be allowed only to describe the famous eastern Hungary botrytized sweet wine.
The wines made with Tocai Friulano tend to be lively and fruit-driven, with notes of citrus and almond, and often a touch of minerality. This one produced by Livio Felluga sells for a bit less than 20 EUR. Although it is a delicate and elegant wine, my overall experience with this bottle has been below expectations.
