On the nose, the first impression is of very ripe fruits. A bit more in the back and coming forward with some aeration, are peppery spices and dry meat aromas, which nicely complements the plums flavour. Overall a rich and pleasant experience.
Once in the mouth, the wine gets lighter and displays a good minerality. The finish is dominated by acidity and astringency/bitterness on the palate. Neither surprise, since tart acidity and an almond-skin finish are among the defining characteristics of the grape. The fruity intensity perceived on the nose being another one.
Colli Orientali del Friuli is a DOC of Friuli-Venezia Giulia, a region in the far north-eastern corner of Italy, and home to some of Friuli’s most prestigious vineyards. Most of the region is renowned for its white-wine production, however within the Colli Orientali del Friuli DOC the reds also shines.
Livio Felluga is no exemption. While the majority of its wines are white, the estate also produces a collection of red wines. Among them this Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso, a local variety, which in this area gives its best.
Refosco dal Peduncolo Rosso is one of those relatively simple and inexpensive wines, which I always enjoy drinking. I first discovered it some 15 years ago and since then it never disappointed me.
This one I got at a Supermarket for 20 EUR. I found this relatively old bottle among more recent ones and was wondering if it would be a better idea to buy this one or go for a safer bet and pick a more recent vintage (the time spent vertically on the shelf doesn’t help a good ageing of the wine). Since I tend to be curious and given that you know how a bottle of wine is only after you have opened it, I took a chance and bought it. I’m happy I took a small chance: overall it has been a very pleasant the experience.
