Maestro 2018

The colour is deep wild salmon. On the nose raspberries, strawberries and some ginger. In the mouth very savoury, but with a taste that reminds me of a candy, a trait that I personally don’t find very appealing. The aftertaste last for quite a bit.

Maestro is a Classic Method sparkling wine made 100% with Sorbara grapes. Sorbara is regarded as the best of the many Lambrusco clones.

The name Lambrusco is source of some confusion. Originally it meant “wild vine”. In the northern Italian region of Emilia-Romagna, it indicates a group of brightly colored grape varieties used to make sparkling red wines. By extension, Lambrusco came to represent not just grape varieties, but also the wine styles made from these varieties.

Historically, Lambrusco wines were widely bottle-fermented using the Classic Method, as it is the case with this exemplar. Today, most wines bearing the Lambrusco name are made in bulk and go through their secondary fermentation in large steel tanks. This is known as the Charmat Method, pioneered in northern Italy and also used in the production of Prosecco.

Maestro 2018 is a Brut made by QUINTOPASSO, a winery located in the area around Modena. The bottle was disgorged in November 2020. I received this wine as a present from Leo Leonelli from the Bar Acquarello in Vignola. It costs around 15 EUR.
