The colour is medium garnet. On the nose prune, cherries under spirit, orange marmalade and tobacco. Although still enjoyable, in the mouth this wine has passed its best. The sensations are subtle, the flavours are fading and the aftertaste rather short.
Malvirà Renesio Riserva is made with 100% Nebbiolo grapes under the Roero DOCG.
Roero DOCG is a small wine district in the hills of Piedmont, northwest Italy. It is known particularly for its refreshing white wines made from Arneis. The area takes its name from the Roero family, powerful bankers who were extremely influential here in the Middle Ages.
The Roero DOCG appellation regulation states that red Roero must include at least 95% of Nebbiolo. It must be aged for 20 months, of which at least six must be in oak barrels. A further 12 months is added to this minimum if the winemaker is seeking “Riserva” status for the wine.
Malvirà winery was founded in the 50ies by the Damonte’s family, who still owns and runs it.
I received this bottle as a present from a friend. The current vintage sells for around 30 EUR a bottle.
