The colour is deep purple. On the nose plums, blueberries, raspberries and some cinnamon. In the mouth warn, with well integrated tannins. The aftertaste fades away quickly.
This wine is made in Argentina with 100% Malbec grapes and on the back label is declared to “undergo 15 months aging in new French and American oak.” Given the wording, I wonder if the wine goes in the wood or the wood in the wine.
Mendoza Vineyards is owned by Origin Global Distribution Inc., a company based in Tortola BVI, with a subsidiary in Vétroz, Valais (Switzerland). According to its website, it has an annual production capacity of 6 mio. bottles. They also export bulk wine to European retailer for their own brand.
MV Gran Reserva is made by Richard Bonvin, a Swiss winemaker from Valais, who studied at Changins and then relocated to Argentina.
It seems like there is a clear Swiss connection, although a not very transparent one.
The bottle looks like a Soviet general with too many awards on the chest. To me they don’t mean much, but I guess they help sell the wine.
For this wine I paid 11.95 CHF at Coop, 33% off the original price of 17.95 CHF. 11.95 CHF seems pretty close to the regular price in the US, and therefore most likely the real market price for this wine.
