The colour is medium ruby. On the nose very mature, jammy fruits. In the mouth smooth with a medium body. The aftertaste is medium long.
This Nerello Calabrese varietal wine is made by Senatore Vini in Cirò.
Nerello Calabrese is the name given on the Calabrian side of the Messina strait to Nerello Mascalese, a highly regarded, dark-skinned grape variety that grows most commonly on the volcanic slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily.
Recent DNA testing has confirmed that the variety is the offspring of Italy’s famous Sangiovese grape variety and Mantonico Bianco.
Mantonico Bianco is grown in Calabria, which let suppose that it travelled from there to Sicily and not viceversa.
Like numerous other southern Italian grapes, Mantonico Bianco is thought to have originated in Greece and was probably transported to the region in antiquity.
For this bottle I paid 18 EUR at the winery, when I visited Calabria during my Eastern Holidays.
