Not everybody may be aware of the fact that this well-known Château also produce a white wine. The only one among the four Médoc’s Premier Crus.
When I first tasted the wine in early April 2013, directly at Château Margaux during the annual En Primeur Barrel Tasting, I got deeply impressed by its balance and its persistence, that lasted till after I left the property.
This is the reason I decided to invest the 150 CHF necessary to buy a bottle “en primeur” (3 years before delivery), which was 30% cheaper than the 215 CHF now charged at ARVI.
The wine is made entirely with Sauvignon Blanc grapes, which is pretty unique for a Bordeaux blanc, that usually also contains some Semillon grapes. Only 1/3 of the harvest is bottled under the label, for a total of less than 12’000 bottle a year.
On the nose it presents itself with green apple, melon and wet stone aroma. In the mouth, very fresh, with lime flavour and a pleasant minerality in the final. The aftertaste is very persistent, although I find it less exciting than when I tasted the wine En Primeur at the amazing Château Margaux.
Overall it is an interesting wine, but the high price partially reflects the scarcity and the prestigious name.
