This wine displays a purple-ruby colour. On the nose it is vinous, with a predominance of cherries accompanied by some roses and herbs. In the mouth it shows a medium body, a good acidity and firm tannins. It finish with a pleasant mild bitterness and drying sensation.
Perricone is a difficult to cultivate, low yield red wine grape variety grown in southwestern Sicily. Its organoleptic characteristics are comparable to Barbera, with the exception of the tangible tannins. It is most commonly used in blends with the island’s dominant grape: Nero d’Avola.
This mono-varietal Perricone is made by Castelluci Miano from 20-30 years old vines grown at an altitude of 700-900 m/s. I bought this bottle in Palermo for 12 EUR.
I find the unique personality of this wine interesting. For sure not one of those soulless perfect wines made to please the taste of the masses. If you are an adventurous wine drinker like me, you should always taste wines like this Perricone, which delivers a particular experience at a very reasonable price.
