The colour is pale straw. On the nose citrus, green apple, resin. In the mouth light, fresh and mineral. The aftertaste is rather short.
The Rèze is an ancient indigenous grape of Valais that has become a rarity. It is considered a par excellence high-Alpine grape variety. Around 1920, almost all vineyards of Valais fell victim to the American phylloxera pest. Prior to the phylloxera pandemic, Rèze was very common. Today, only 1.5 hectares are still cultivated in Valais as a local speciality.
This exemplar of Resi is produced by St. Jodern winery in Visperterminen.
The grape has a special role as the main ingredient for the traditional Vin de Glacier (glacier wine), a wine often described as the Swiss answer to Sherry, as the two are made in a similar way. Vin de Glacier is in fact left to age very slowly with the solera system, gaining complex, oxidative characters.
For this bottle I paid 26 CHF at the winery.
