The colour is medium garnet. On the nose very light aroma of red fruits: cherries with some strawberries and raspberries. In the mouth similar to a canoe: close to water. No aftertaste worth mentioning.
This wine is a blend of 80% Sangiovese, with some Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. Riserva Ducale is an iconic brand of Chianti. It has seen almost 90 vintages.
The origins of Ruffino dates back to 1877. Since 2011 it is fully owned by Constellation Brands, whose equity interest in Ruffino began in 2004 with a 40 percent stake in the company.
Constellation was founded in 1945 as an upstate New York bulk wine producer. Today it is one of the biggest wine makers of the world. Besides wine, Constellation also produce and market beers and spirits. The company has more than 100 brands in its portfolio and generates some 8 bn USD in sales. The wine brands include Robert Mondavi. The beer portfolio includes Corona. The spirits brands include Svedka Vodka.
Ruffino Chianti Classico Riserva Ducale sells at Coop for 19.95 CHF, but from time to time is on offer, as it was the case last week. For this bottle I paid 10 CHF. Even at this price I personally don’t feel like buying more.
