The colour is medium ruby. On the nose blackberries, black cherries, prunes, cinnamon, and some smoke. In the mouth pleasantly smooth, filling and well balanced. The aftertaste last for quite a while.
This wine made by Varone is a blend of four typical Valais grapes: Syrah, Pinot Noir, Humagne Rouge and Cornalin.
The winemakers of Valais produce wines with many different grape varieties. Some are peculiar to the region, others are international varieties. The result is an interesting, diversified experience for the consumer, but a lack of identity for the wine region.
From my point of view, I think it would be better for Valais winemakers to focus on fewer varieties and to create some excellencies, as it is the case in Canton Vaud with Chasselas and in Canton Ticino with Merlot. Among the best candidates I believe would be Petit Arvine for whites and Cornalin for reds. Both grapes are peculiar to the region and generate excellent wines.
When I visited Valais in August, I tasted quite a few Cornalin and Petit Arvine wines. I experienced a lot of volatility in enjoyment, which doesn’t help in positioning the grape in the consumer mind. Another reason to focus and improve the average quality.
I bought this bottle at Les Celliers de Sion during a long weekend in Valais. I got a 0.5dl bottle for 19.50 CHF to avoid over drinking. The full bottle costs 29 CHF. I have one in my cellar home. I’m now looking forward to drinking it.
