I received this late harvest Vermentino di Gallura as a present. I didn’t it know it, but I hear it is widely praised and judged as one of the best in its class.
The nose makes me build up expectations: it is very appealing. Mainly due to the aromaticity of the grape itself, and the intensity, accentuated by the late harvest. Once in the mouth, I’m surprised by a prickly acidity. I’m not an expert in oenology, but I guess that not all acidity is natural (probably to compensate for the over ripeness of the late harvest).
On a second consideration the aroma seems a bit artificial too: more like candy than grape. Not really my style of wine, as I prefer more natural wines, where the various elements are well balanced. On the other side, I can see why this wine receives prizes in the market. It has an appealing aroma and many people would find the acidity refreshing.
