The colour is deep ruby. On the nose light notes of cherry, but with a background that doesn’t feel right. In the mouth more present, although a bit rustic, with good acidity and a drying finish that last for a while. Usually, wines tend to be richer on the nose than in the mouth. Interestingly, in this case it is the opposite.
This Teroldego Rotaliano DOC is produced by Cantina Rotaliana di Mezzolombardo. It is obtained from selected grapes sourced in the best vineyards of Campo Rotaliano from vines with an average age of over 40 years.
Teroldego is a deeply colored red wine grape grown mostly in the Trentino wine region of northern Italy. An ancient grape variety that has been cultivated in the peninsula for hundreds of years. DNA testing has revealed that it is a parent of Lagrein, another wine typical of the region. Campo Rotaliano is a sandy, gravelly plain, historically regarded as the best site for this variety. As such, Teroldego Rotaliano DOC is one of the few site and variety specific appellations in Italy.
I bought this bottle in a Supermarket near Garda. To me it is one of those wines for which there is neither much to praise nor to criticise. At 11.50 EUR I judge it a fair wine, interesting for its uniqueness and for the good QPR.
