The colour is pale straw. On the nose citrusy and nutty notes. In the mouth mineral, with a taste of apples and peanuts. The aftertaste is rather short.

Researchers have identified more than 120 grapes indigenous to the geographical area around the Holy Land. These include Biblical era white varieties like Marawi (a.k.a. Hamdani), Jandali and Dabouki, red grapes like Baladi Asmar and Bittuni, and more modern crosses like Argaman (a cross between Carignan and the Portuguese grape Souzao). Frontón de Oro Vertierra 2020

The colour is pale ruby. On the nose dried figs and blackberries. In the mouth light, with a bitter finish. The aftertaste is short.

This red wine is made with Vijariego grapes under the Gran Canaria DO. Vijariego Negro is a little-known red grape variety indigenous to the Canary Islands. Bodegas Dominguez Tinto 2019

The colour is medium garnet. On the nose game and vegetables. In the mouth rustic, with a short aftertaste.

This red wine is made under the Tacoronte-Acentejo DO, the oldest Denominación de Origen of the Canary Islands. Established in 1992, nowadays this DO accounts for one fifth of the wine production of the Canary Islands. Cima Riserva della Casa 2009

The colour is deep ruby. On the nose blackberries, liquorice, coffee. In the mouth fresh, but with a not so pleasant bitter finish. The aftertaste is short.

This Barbera del Monferrato Riserva Superiore DOGC, obtained from overripe grapes and aged in French oak tonneaux for 36 months, is made by Accornero.

Fattoria dei Barbi Vigna del Fiore 2012

The colour is medium garnet. On the nose plums, blueberries, black cherries, chocolate. In the mouth gripping tannins and bright acidity. The aftertaste is bitter and rather short.

Philipponnat Royale Réserve Brut

The colour is medium gold, with fine, medium-lasting bubbles. On the nose a bit over the top, with mainly tertiary notes imparted by the oak and some oxidation. In the mouth not very tasty and rather on the short side.

Jema 2015

The colour is medium ruby. On the nose mocha, chocolate, cinnamon. In the mouth edgy and light-body, with a drying finish. The aftertaste is rather short.

This wine is made by Cesari under the Veronese IGT denomination with 100% Corvina grapes.

Corvina is famous as a key constituent of Valpolicella DOC(G) wines, notably Amarone. When it is bottled on its own, it’s relegated to lowly IGT status. Continue reading “Jema 2015”

L’Enclos

The colour is medium gold, with a few fine, short-lasting bubbles. On the nose nuts, accompanied by a subtle aroma of apples and bananas. In the mouth a lively acidity, with the apples reappearing in the taste. The aftertaste is rather short.

This Champagne is made by Liébart-Régniet with 100% Petit Meslier grapes. All grapes come from a single parcel, from the 2019 harvest. Both fermentations, alcoholic and malolactic, have been carried out in oak barrels. Continue reading “L’Enclos”

Macchiona 2006

The colour is medium garnet. On the nose leather, earth, chocolate and baby diapers. In the mouth simple, but pleasant. The aftertaste is rather short.

Synodos 2016

The colour is deep ruby and cloudy. The nose reveals some of the imperfections typical of natural wines. In the mouth acidic and drying. The aftertaste is rather short. With some air, both aroma and taste improve, but overall this is not a very pleasant wine, as it is often the case with red natural wines (according to my experience so far).
