Cima Riserva della Casa 2009

The colour is deep ruby. On the nose blackberries, liquorice, coffee. In the mouth fresh, but with a not so pleasant bitter finish. The aftertaste is short.

This Barbera del Monferrato Riserva Superiore DOGC, obtained from overripe grapes and aged in French oak tonneaux for 36 months, is made by Accornero.

Barbera del Monferrato Riserva Superiore was separated from the standard Barbera del Monferrato DOC in 2008 and promoted to the highest DOCG status. Continue reading “Cima Riserva della Casa 2009”

Macchiona 2006

The colour is medium garnet. On the nose leather, earth, chocolate and baby diapers. In the mouth simple, but pleasant. The aftertaste is rather short.

Macchiona is a biodynamic/natural red wine made with 50% Barbera and 50% Bonarda (Croatina) grapes by Elena Pantaleoni at La Stoppa winery in Rivergado, under the wide Emilia IGT appellation. Continue reading “Macchiona 2006”

Buttafuoco 2017

The colour is medium ruby. On the nose cherries, blackberries and some toasted notes. In the mouth rather light and thin, but refreshing. The alcohol is a bit too high. The aftertaste is pleasantly fruity, but fades away quickly.

This wine is made under the Buttafuoco dell’Oltrepò Pavese DOC. It is a blend of Croatina, Barbera and Uva Rara. Continue reading “Buttafuoco 2017”

Vignamorello 2019

The colour is deep ruby. On the nose, aroma of ripe amarena, blueberries and plums. In the mouth, bitter and astringent, a remarkable contrast to the intensely fruity nose. The aftertaste is rather short.

Gutturnio is a DOC of the hilly vineyards south of Piacenza, in western Emilia-Romagna. Barbera must account for 55-70% of the blend, with the lesser known Croatina contributing 30-45%. Continue reading “Vignamorello 2019”

C’era una volta… 2019

Another simple and fruity wine, like most I have been drinking during my wandering on the Via Francigena in Lombardy and Emilia. Wines that are better drunk than talked about. Mostly cheap, but nevertheless enjoyable. Like this Buttafuoco dell’Oltrepò Pavese DOC that I bought at a Supermarket for 3.99 EUR. An easy to drink wine that paired well with the sandwich filled with rolled bacon I had for lunch. Continue reading “C’era una volta… 2019”

La Valorosa 2018

A simple and fruity wine that I think is more suitable for immediate enjoyment than overdone analysis. For this wine I therefore avoid writing tasting notes. Enough to say that I enjoyed it in its simplicity. Maybe that’s how wine should be: just fermented juice.

This Gutturnio Frizzante is a blend of Barbera and Bonarda produced by Cantina Manzini under the denomination Gutturnio DOC. Continue reading “La Valorosa 2018”

Bricco dell’Uccellone 2009 vs. Bricco della Bigotta 2009

Bricco dell’Uccellone has a medium garnet colour. On the nose at first an unpleasant smell of fish and cabbage. With some air, a more pleasant plumb and cinnamon aroma. In the mouth very rounded and smooth, with a medium long aftertaste.

Bricco della Bigotta also has a medium garnet colour. On the nose a much more pleasant aroma that reminds of chocolate, gingerbread, tiramisu and panettone. In the mouth a bit less rounded and smooth than Bricco dell’Uccellone, with a slightly less long aftertaste. Continue reading “Bricco dell’Uccellone 2009 vs. Bricco della Bigotta 2009”

Wines <30 CHF

Last month I decided to do something different and to organise a blind tasting of wines that sells for less than 30 CHF.

The five wines we tasted have been freely picked by the participants to the event among the ones they prefer in this price range. Continue reading “Wines <30 CHF”

Gaudium Magnum 2011

25 December 2017

The trademark cherry aroma of the Barbera grape shows up in the underground and is not overpowered neither by the high alcohol content (15.5%) nor by the almost three years in barrel.

In the mouth less powerful than you would expect. More a sign of a well made wine than a lack of anything. Continue reading “Gaudium Magnum 2011”
