The colour is deep ruby. On the nose very fruity. Blackberries, plums, cherries, and pomegranate. In the mouth medium body, round and silky, with smooth tannins and a nice acidity. The aftertaste is pretty long and chocolate tasting.
This Bordeaux-style wine is made by Teperberger winery by blending 50% Cabernet Sauvignon, 15% Cabernet Franc, 30% Merlot and 5% Petit Verdot grapes. The Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot grapes were harvested from a site in the Shomron Mountains. The Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc grapes came from vineyards in the Ayalon Valley. The wine matured in French oak barrels for 8 months.
Teperberger winery was founded in 1870 by Austrian immigrant Avraham Teperberg and his son in the Old City of Jerusalem. It is Israel’s oldest winery. Nowadays the winery is managed by the fifth generation of the family and is one of Israel’s leading wineries, producing over four million bottles a year, from light, easy-going wines to opulent, age-worthy reds.
This wine is classified kosher, meaning that the entire winemaking process from crushing to bottling must be handled by Sabbath-observant Jews. There is rabbinical oversight during the process, and no non-kosher finings or additives may be used.
I bought this bottle for 69.80 Shekels (17 CHF) at a grocery store in Tsaflon, where I stopped for the night during my walk from Jaffa to Jerusalem.
