On the nose, the wood and the alcohol dominate the fruit. Some eucalyptus’ notes, but not much complexity. After a while more fruit shows up, but it soon fades away.
In the mouth less rich than you would expect from a wine made with grapes that get raisined before fermentation. The persistence is also disappointing.
The 14.5% alcohol is clearly perceived, both on the pungent nose and the smooth feeling in the mouth.
In general, I find the wines produced by Gialdi among the best of my region, but this high range Merlot del Ticino is certainly not worth the almost 100 CHF charged.
From a marketing point of view, 36 months of oak (twice new) may help partially justifying the high price, but doesn’t seem to add any pleasure to the experience. Quite the opposite.
