The colour is medium amber. On the nose aroma of peach, apricot, figs marmalade. In the mouth rich and luscious, with guava and honey flavours. The aftertaste lingers for a long time.
This Icewine is made by the Canadian Trius Winery on Niagara Peninsula.
To make this Icewine naturally frozen Vidal grapes from Niagara Peninsula vineyards were hand harvested at -10˚C. The grapes were pressed frozen. One quarter of the must was barrel fermented. The sugar content of this sweet wine is 188 g/L.
Vidal is a crossing of Trebbiano (Ugni Blanc) and Seibel 4986 (Rayon d’Or) and was originally intended to kickstart brandy production in Canada’s eastern provinces. However, Vidal’s thick skin, strong resistance to cold and high natural acidity made it the perfect candidate to champion the Icewine category. Riesling, Cabernet Franc and Cabernet Sauvignon are the other grape varieties used to make Icewine in Canada.
Niagara Peninsula, located on the southern shores of Lake Ontario, is the largest and most productive viticultural area of Canada. Ninety percent of Canada’s Icewine is made here, which makes the region the biggest producer of the style on Earth.
To produce Icewine, summers must be hot and winters must be cold and sharp. Of all the wine-producing regions in the world, only Ontario has a winter climate sufficiently cold to ensure an Icewine crop every year.
I received this bottle as a present from my sister-in-law, who lives in Ontario. At the winery it sells for 85 CAD (60 CHF) for 385ml.
