The colour is pale ruby. On the nose, orange marmalade, lemon peel, cured meats, and ripe cheese. In the mouth, firm tannins and good acidity. The aftertaste is tasty, and last for a while.
This exemplar of varietal Trusseau is produced by Fruitière Vinicole de Pupillin, under the Arbois AOC. Pupillin is in the Jura department of France, on the hills between Burgundy and Switzerland.
The Arbois appellation was one of the very first six French AOCs introduced on May 15, 1936. Its claim to be the very first seems to be based on its position in the alphabet relative to the other five.
Arbois is considered the hometown of Louis Pasteur. Although he was born in Dole, his family moved to Arbois when Louis was only 5 years old.
Among the many studies of Louis Pasteur there were some dedicated to wine. Pasteur was the first to explain the role of microorganisms in fermentation, and his work led to improvements in wine making. He played an important role in understanding that yeast is a living organism that convert sugar to ethanol during fermentation. He also helped explaining what caused spoilage in wine, and therefore contributed greatly to the quality of the wine we enjoy nowadays. In Arbois Louis Pasteur even had his own vineyard.
For this bottle I paid 9.45 EUR in a Supermarket while visiting the region. The person attending the wine section suggested me this bottle, since it “sell well“. I’m very satisfied with my purchase. I find it a wine with a lot of personality.
