Very pleasant and satisfying from the first sniff. Ripe and intense nose of predominantly red fruits. In the mouth soft texture, despite the firm tannins. Some orange like sensations. Smooth finish and pretty long aftertaste.
This Brunello di Montalcino DOCG (Italy’s first DOCG, alongside Barolo) sells at Coop for 28.50 CHF. I don’t have much experience with more expensive wines in this prestigio denomination, but this very affordable one I find very good.
Probably more for medium term enjoyment than long cellaring.
Brunello di Montalcino always reminds me of how long the reputation damages made by some overly self-serving producers can last for an entire wine denomination.
In 2008 it was discovered that some producers added other grapes into Brunello, a wine that should be made only with Sangiovese. The use of other grapes was mainly for the purpose to inflating production and increasing profit, as well as helping in darkening the color and in making the wine easier to drink at an early age.
