The colour is deep ruby. On the nose red fruits and spices. Raspberries, cherries, tobacco and anise come to mind. In the mouth medium body, medium acidity and soft tannins. The finish reminds me of black tea. The aftertaste is medium long.
A medium wine with plenty of awards: trebicchieri Gambero Rosso, Gold Medal Expovina, Gold Medal Mundusvini, Gold Medal Berliner Wine Trophy. Moreover, 90 points Maroni and 93 points Veronelli. All in 2019. Everything proudly displayed on the bottle.
To my taste a bit overdone, but probably necessary to sell a wine made from a little known grape variety such as Nero di Troia. A grape from northern Puglia traditionally used in the blend of the bulk wine that was sent from Puglia to northern Italy and France to bolster the wines of those regions.
Thanks to the improvements of modern winemaking, since the turn of this century Nero di Troia has experienced something of a revival, at least as far as the production of varietal wines is concerned. Although it is still overshadowed by the two dominant red wine grapes of the region, Negroamaro and Primitivo, Nero di Troia can deliver wines of quality and complexity, which also display a sense of place.
For this bottle I paid 13.95 CHF at Denner, 26% off from the regular price of 18.95 CHF.
